Advice on negotiating with potential advertisers

    Hey guys,

I'm about to start negotiating with a potential advertiser and I need some advice from some of you more experienced people out there.

Hypothetically, say I want $100 a month from a sponsor. Do I straight up tell them that I want $100 take it or leave it or mark up my initial asking price?

If it's to mark up my intial asking price, how much should I mark it up by? 10%? 20%? 50%? 100%?

If I wanted $100 I woudl probably ask for $125 I may start of as high as $150 depending on how intrested I figures the advertiser was.

In most cases you will always get nocked down, so you have to start higher than what you think you will
    accept in the end.

I've been stuck negotiating with potential advertisers too. I've contacted many sites which have content which would be of value to my visitors, and have received no responses.

Let me know how it works out and any tips you learn along the way.

We find two strategies work best:

    A. asking the advertiser to name a price they feel is
reasonable, the trying to negotiate up, or if it is fair
leave it as it is and go for it.

    or

    B. making an offer, say $0.25 CPC, so that we have room
    to negotiate while covering costs.

    Hmm...

Yes, I would start your asking price rather high compared to what you want.

I also love to set my rates at a reasonable price and offer to discount rates significantly for more sales.

For instance, I sell the top ad on my newsletter for $30, but one guy wanted 10 top ad spots and would pay me for them all immediately, so I told him he could have all 10 for $200. I figure giving people a good break for buying bulk encourages them to spend again and it also builds good will. But of course, it's good for you too, because you have sold a lot of (virtual) inventory to one person, which puts you ahead of the game, so to speak.
