    Layout Review - sigh, be brutal

    Hi - so, I just completed this site (my first using only xhtml/css) and I'd like some feedback ...

    http://www.thegamingadvisor.com/

    The grey bar at the top will house an additional menu. Didn't have a chance to put mock banners in the top-ads region but you get the idea.

    One big question - do the center buttons (Poker/Casino Video Tutorials) depart to drastically from the feel of the layout?

    Thanks

    The whole site looks like made from 2 different styles:
    - black/red/yellow theme (darker)
    - gray with faded other colors (lighter)
    I'd try to keep more consistent look and feel.

    There are some really nice things to go off of with this site. One thing I notice, and mabey this is what your going for, is that it just feels so busy and cluttered, mabey take a little bit off the front page and move them to seperate pages. The other thing I'm not sure about is the Vegas cutout on the top menu, I'm just not sure it's really needed, I really like the left side of the banner though. Good luck with launching this site, hope this helps.

    Varelse - by "gray with other faded colors" did you mean the buttons in the middle + top menu? With the textured light gray? I was trying to make the buttons stand out - just wasn't sure if they fit.

    webhhs - I was actually going for a bit of a cluttered look ... wanted to have a lot of action on the page. Vegas is all lights and action and the affiliate banners on this site are probably going to be animated gifs/flash ... I will try to smooth it out a bit.

    Can either of you tell me why I have a 1px space at the bottom of my footer?! It's been killing me trying to get that out of there!

    Thanks for the feed-back!

    Hey godmonkey, How do you make a nice looking banner like that. I'm no artist and can do a website layout using CSS but my graphics stink. Did ya make that yourself or have someone do it? I think the site is very cool looking

    Yes, I had these elements in mind. I think you should try making them standing out but keeping the same style - now they look a bit out of place there. Like they were taken from other template and inserted here.
    Try to keep a few colors from the site layout, don't add new ones. You can try using the negative contrast (which is what you tried to do in fact - dark text on light background). Just keep the consistent style for these buttons.

    I agree, the colours are a bit disjointed. Like Varelse says, try adding more contrast to your nav area. Its a bit hard to read on a non-lcd monitor.

    Hi, the links on the left should stand out a bit more I say.

    is the large empty bar at the bottom going to have banners as well? if not, i'd say get rid of that and put the 'Home' menu (about Us, Affiliate, and Contact) centered along the bottom as some kind of footer.

    and i agree with the other comments on the red links on the left - they're a bit hard to read.

    i'd also say center the entire page so you have equal amounts of the light gray diamonds on either side of the page.

    as far as the 1px problem, i've had a few of those and the only way is to just go through the css line by line. when i'm desperate i'll make a backup, delete everything and then add things in one at a time top see what each one does. tedious, but eventually it'll show up.

    dankb - I was afraid you were going to say that (1px problem)

    The footer - yes that is going to have the typical text-only main-menu navigation ...

    I'm going to try and post an updated screenshot early next week ...

    I'll try and do something bout the navigation - I actually got the idea from Askmen.com (the client wants our site to have a similar look)

    Still no word on those central buttons - feedback anyone?

    the central buttons are well integrated to the look and feel of the header so they aren't a distraction/departure to my eye at all. my only suggestion would be to make them exactly the width of the other center elements (wsop and limit) but without they still fit in.

    I don't think the video buttons need to be connected to each other. Maybe break up that grey bar seperating them? Also, maybe move the word tutorials right under the words Poker/Casino Video so that it's easier to scan the page and see what those buttons are for.

    I think the page is a little cluttered, and it took me a second to realize what the site is there for. I think it would help if you made headings a little more obvious, and maybe added a paragraph explaining exactly what the site is for. (Free casino gaming news, destinations, and tutorials, right?)

    The first thing you need to change IMO is the color of the red links on the left menu! the contrast is too low IMO!
    Nice overall!

    Make the navigation pop a wee bit more. I'd add an about section, as now it takes a minute or two to figure it out.

    Take out the italic in the reflection text of the logo. (maybe take the reflection text out all together).

    Other than that, nice.

    Hello
    Perhaps you could put some green/white gradient or some sort of background image in the where the white is to make it look more constant.
    Nothing big but a sutle bgimage might pick it up a bit, all other aspecs of the site look great in my opinion

    I love the graphics on the site,

    I agree that the red links on the left are a little hard to read.
    With the layout, one thing I would comment on is it not being scalable.. The links get bunched up with an increased font-size.
    Also with semantics - Use <h>' to markup the headings and use background-image to display the nice graphics..
    If you place <span>' inside the <h>' then by making the spans invisible you can - make the image visble when stylesheets are used, and when they're not.. The normal expected Heading would display and no image.

    e.g.

    <h2 id="home"><span>Home</span></h2>

    [css]
    h2 span {
    display: none;
    }

    #home {
    background-image:...
    }

    Good work,

    HI,

    Viewd with FF1.5

    * Yes, do it centered It will work better on user (on me
    + nice photo/graphical designs
    - but they are to big for dialup users (we make net faster
    * try to use some animation (only one per page) to accent some important things

    Thank you

    doesn't fit on my screen, so i left as i do any other site that is designed too wide. i don't have a 20 inch monitor and i never keep my browser at full size because i work with many programs at once i like to move them around to get to other windows without minimizing.

    I think that it looks pretty good so far, and will look even better when you have the sponsorship banners filled in at the top.

    My only critism is that for myself atleast it is a bit hard to transition from the black and grey background/menu over to the white content portion. It hurts my eyes a little bit.

    i like it... did some extra touches to dress up the home page with images/tables. Something is bothering me about the red nav text links but the colors are cool. I picture some green when thinking about card tables and stuff.. but i'm diggin it for sure.

    nice ad space (leaderboard)

    i think the grey bar under the top banner could be a lil smaller... waste of space....

    thumbs up

    Interesting design, but navbar needs some improvements! Needs to be another color, not that black maybe a grey background like http://www.thegamingadvisor.com/imag...no-buttons.gif

    My first impression (without looking at the detail content) is, hmmmm, pretty good!

    My 2nd impression is what that whole grey bar above banner does?

    My 3rd impression is why you have one medium length grey bar running through the top of two boxes with different contents?

    But overall, I have good impression.
    Happy everyday!
