    Nightmare with CSS Rollover menus

    Hi,

    I've been developing a CSS image rollover menu but I'm having a few problems.....
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/

    In IE7 there are two menu items showing, in FireFox I've only got one. There should be seven. Can anyone tell me why the DIV is not extending down?

    As an alternative I started building a new menu without images....
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/list.htm

    Only problem with this one is that the border changes colour when you rollover it, and the text changes colour when you rollover it - I want the border + text to change colour when you hover ANYWHERE over the button. Is this possible???

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Toby

    Try setting the anchor display to block:

    Code:
    #navlist a {
    display: block;
    }

    Hi Cad,

    Thanks a lot for your reply.

    I added the "display: block" and it's almost there....
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/list.htm

    ...although the text still remains the same colour when you move the mouse over the border. It's only when you move the mouse further into the box that the text changes colour.

    Still, I will show to the customer and see what he says.

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hello

    IE < 7 only hovers on the A tag , so that tags needs the css styling the ul li only contains the a tag

    These menu's often have severe haslayout problems in IE *html .xxx{height:1%}

    Code:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

    	<!--
    	body{
    	font-family: verdana, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;

    	* {padding:0;margin:0;}

    	#navlist{width:200px;list-style:none;margin:10px 0 0 10px;}

    	 #navlist li{margin:0 0 5px 0;}

    	}
    	#navlist a:hover{color: #000000;border:1px solid #000000;display:block;}
    	 -->
    	</style>
    </head>

    Thanks a lot for your reply all4nerds.

    I have made those changes and uploaded to the web server:-
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/list.htm

    It's working great in IE7 & Firefox. Haven't tested IE5/6.

    Thanks again for your help. Just hope the client likes it now!!

    Hello again!

    I've added the menu to the main page now....
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/

    Two small issues:-

    1) I cannot get the content div to float next to the nav div, it has dropped down underneath it for some reason.

    2) In IE7 the menu has spread out further, even though I've copied all the styling from my previous test CSS file.

    I'm sure I've done something stupid to cause both of these things to happen!

    Thanks again for your help guys.

    Hello again all4nerds,

    Wow... I've got so many questions it's untrue!

    I have resolved the previous problem by giving the content div a width of 568px and floating it to the right:-

    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/index.htm

    However I haven't used all of you code because I don't have a clue what it all means.

    I wasn't sure what "set padding on tags in container content use a width 780-200- 10 space -2 (border) float right" meant! What is wrong with having padding on the content div? Isn't it quicker and easier to set the padding once rather than on each tag?

    How should I space out my <p> tags? Why is IE7 still spazzing my menu but it looks fine in IE6?

    Thanks again for all your help - I really appreciate it!

    hello

    Donít embrace the box model problem disaster, its totally unnecessary
    Width 568 + 15 padding =width 598 px = drop see FAQ CSS first item

    haslayout for IE 7 see also FAQ CSS
    *+html .nav li,*+html .nav li a{zoom:1;}

    space out p h tags see example with padding or margins

    Thanks again all4nerds....

    I've heard of the box model before but never the layout bug.

    I think I finally have a design that works in IE6/7 and FF:-
    http://www.newbondstreetpawnbrokers.com/new/

    Do you guys test all your sites on IE7? Do you run 6 and 7 on one machine?

    It was a pain in the *rse with IE5/6.... Now it's just getting ridiculous!
    (or is that just me thinking that?)

    Anyway, thank you for helping out.

    don't think it is possible to run both IE6 and 7 on same machine, well not easily anyway I am probably going to be wrong on that - is there a fairly non-technical solution??

    I found some useful info about it here:-
    http://www.456bereastreet.com/archiv...ie_6_and_ie_7/

    See comment 12. I think you can have IE7 running as your primary browser and install 6 standalone. I'm not sure how technical it is but it looks like a pain in the butt to me...

    Update - It's very easy.

    Download from here:-
    http://browsers.evolt.org/download.p...e6eolas_nt.zip

    Extract files to a location and run iexplore.exe from there.

    wow! Have you done this? How up to date is the IE6 version as when it was first realeased there were a lot of security problems etc etc. It also looks like you can download even earlier versions - are these all stand alone as well? If so then it is a heck of a resource.

    Hello again,

    One last question on this page.... (sorry)

    I'm trying to aid navigation by making the link for the page that you are on a different colour. I thought I could acheive this with the following:-

    Code:
    #active a:link, #active a:hover,
    #active a:active, #active a:visited {
    		color: #666666;
    		border:1px solid #666666;
    		display:block;
    }

    <a id="active" href="index.htm">HOME</a>
    However it doesn't seem to be working:-

    Now what have I done wrong???

    And in answer to your question Blue Sky, no, I didn't make that website, I just found it. I don't know how up to date each browser is, but I think they are all standalone versions.

    I'm having a few problems with the standalone IE6 on my computer though:-

    I get prompted for a username and password when trying to browse anything on localhost. Also it does not display my javascript slideshow on here:-

    So not ideal for testing purposes so far...

    regarding running IE7 and IE6 using the evolt link (post 13) there is a lot of caution in the comments here http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2006/...eta-3-is-here/

    Thought it was too good to be true

    all4nerds,

    I can see it's working for you... but it's not working for me (even though I've literally copied and pasted your code into my style sheet)....!

    Now I'm confused
