    user information...

i would like to put a welcome message on one of my sites... something like "welcome username!" with the username being the login name that that person used to login to their computers.

is it possible to gather this information using client-side js? if not, how can i accomplish this without having each person enter their name upon entering the page?

    tia...

    Use a cookie...

First time visitors to your site will have the opportunity to enter their user name (through a form or something else) and that info will be stored in the cookie.

When they return to the site have the code requesst the information from the cookie and write it to the page- and have a default set if the cookie does not exist.

    thanks for the response, jb.

ideally, i'd really like to have it where the user doesn't have to enter anything, ever.

I've never had a use for that ... and consequently don't have the exact anser for you ...

But often times people aren't responsible for naming their computers (unless they're a NERD ) ...

    So you'd get a lot of "Welcome " + "Dell Customer" +"HP USER" + "CC123456", etc ... in my opinion ...
