    Moving Machines

    Hi Folks,

As most of you are more than likely aware, my Thinkpad met an untimely death thanks to a glass of fanta.

I have since replaced that laptop with a new one, but was wondering what the best (up-to-date) method of transferring files and data from the old one to the ne one is? I looked at ethernet, but that would mean mucking around with IP's, and we have just got the ADSL working perfectly so it's not something I would like to do, but if all else fails then I may give it a go. I tried infra-red, but it was too slow (or maybe just my settings...). I would love to do it USB (that would be the fastest, correct?) but can't seem to find any software or windows settings that allow this!

I must get this machine off the bed and get some sleep now, and we have to go shopping tomorrow night , but I will check back when we get home and hopefully one of you great people will have come up with a solution

p.s. please don't hammer me for any typos, I whacked my hand on a pallet at work today uch:

Ehternet would be the quickest way to go. Just set up your two computers with the NetBEUI protocol and you have an instant workgroup, no IPs needed.

Eithernet would be fastest... but you could try USB, you just need to buy a cable that does it first should probably come with some s/w ?

I echo that the best way, in your circumstance, is USB crossover. But a USB corssover can run you $70 USD and up. A much cheaper, but yes...slower, method is a modem crossover. Create a peer-peer network by modem cable cable.

    I would suggest:

    1. Ethernet: Computer to Computer connection, it is probably the fastest way to do it and chances are, you already have most of the equipment.

    2. USB: Probably second fastest, as to the windows settings, you just go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Direct Cable Connection (If your in Win2K it's Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Network and Dial up connections than select "Directly connect to another computer from the options")

    3. Parrallel/Serial: Find a parrallel or a serial cable and use the method in number 2 only this time select Parrallel or serial instead of USB

PS: I didn't know you had fanta in Australia, I loved that drink when I was living in Pakistan

Yep. We've got all the colours of the rainbow

When I was a lad, Fanta only came in orange or orange.
