Where to get dirt cheap PCs?

I want to get a computer for a friend - so he can surf the net at home etc.

I want at least 266 Mhz processor, AMD would be fine.
I want at least 32Mb RAM
Must have at least 4 PCI slots including 3 free slots.
HDD must be at least 1 Gig.
    2x CDROM would be fine
14" SVGA monitor would be fine.
No frills please, no sound card/3d graphics/modem required. Keyboard and mouse preffered but not necessary.

Where can somebody get this kind of junk for dirt cheap prices? Last year I sold my K6-III 450MHz entire system for $120 to a second hand store but there's no way I could buy that back for under $500.

Please, no offers. I just want to get some idea of where I can find really cheap junk.

Look around for school or ex-government auctions. They generally don't even know what they are selling, you can pick up a bargain Classifieds in the paper or the trading post (the real australian trading post that is, www.tradingpost.com.au and the melbourne trading post)...

From my experience with the melbourne trading post, most of the computer hardware is far too overvalued. People who don't quite grasp the concept that a P233MMX is not worth $900 now are driving up the price of that whole market. It's a bit inflated.

OriginalH I like your idea... did you pick it up in bits or as a system? I assume as a system.

Yup, this one was as a system (clear out at work ), but have built systems of almost identical spec for a similar price from computer fairs before now (for firends and family). In fact, my current beast is comprised mainly of computer fair parts, and is consquently STILL worth more than I paid for it, several months on (which, as you know, is decades in PC years ).

hmmmm, most 266's will come with much better specs. than that actually I reackon you might pick up somthing like that for $250-$300 (with a 15" moniter). I brought my P200MMX w/96mb ram for about $70 and had to get a moniter and cdrom for it...

Take a look at refurbished computers. You can get some great deals from established companies like Dell that come with warranties and are in very good shape.

$120!! Tell me if you want to get rid of any other PCs for that sort of money, MMJ. I'll give you $150, straight out !! ;-)

I think $500 for that system is quite reasonable, actually.

Anyway I've had the most success with buying old gear at the swap meets held at the various Town Halls around Melbourne every Sunday. I poked my head in at the one at Collingwood last sunday. I think there's one at Ivanhoe Town hall this weekend.

$3 to get in. Plenty of cheap gear. Worth a look, even if you don't buy. Check the dates at www.comtrader.com.au

But I warn you. There won't be any k6 450s for $120, because I would have already snapped them up them

The trick is to get things at near wholesale prices. Retail has too huge a markup (70% in some instances)

    But check out this thread:

    http://www.sitepointforums.com/showt...threadid=39652

1ghz, 256mb, 20gb hd, all the fixins except a monitor.

Out the door for $467 plus shipping (mine was $18)

Thats a good price... although its a better computer than you're looking for.

    Thanks for the link alex.

I'll be able to wander around a couple of swap meets over summer and hopefully snap up a bargain.

The PC I sold was originally a 386 DX-33 upgraded 3 times to a K6-III 450. It had the original monitor, which was SVGA 1024x768 - Interlaced! The CD-rom was 6x. Because it was such a mixed bag nobody wanted to buy it as a system (even though it was actually a great system).

I didn't regret selling it for nothing, because back then I didn't need it and it was taking up space. But obviously, now I regret it.

    Thanks again
