    Lindows

The new OS that revolutionizes the way computers operate. Linux box that runs Windows apps seamlessly. Is it a gimmick to make more money off the stupid computer user or is it a sellout by the OSDN community to embrace Microsoft? Or neither?

I've been looking forward to that - has it been released?

I believe its a wonderful idea, and as an article I read said - Its success will be on the fact whether it will run MS Office 97 and 2000 seamlessely. If it does, it can succeed greatly.

The way it has been built/architectured - basically they have modified Linux to such an extent that it can run Windows programs. This is compared to Win4Lin/Wine/VMWare which runs on 'top' of Linux as an application.....

I heard about this on TechTV. Personally, I could care less about it - but it costs $100, that should automatically turn off many people.

    It's WINE:

Those guys are just selling a WINE-oriented Linux distro... nothing original in that.

What about Linux-Mandrake?? Don't they already have something that allows a person to run Windows apps? (I've never used Linux except for hosting, so I don't know much about it).

That logo looks JUST like the Windows logo...

    NOT

THe sad thing is that they aren't sueing to prevent the release of Lindows, they're simply sueing because they feel that the branding is too similar.

My guess is that MS probably figures it sounds too much the same. I'm sure their motives for suing are more than just the branding, however if they can prevent it from being released that'd be a bonus for them. I really don't see the hype around this product just yet. It's too new, not released, and most likely merely a tweaked $100 Linux/Wine distro.

People people, there is nothing like this already. Yes, there are many programs that can run windows apps on linux, but this will be a linux OS that can run windows apps NATIVELY...without the need for another piece of software...

I haven't really made up my mind on this on. It will probably be one of those fads that come and go.

But I sincerely wish them the best of luck.

I don't think the 100 dollar price tag will turn a lot of people away. Look at the price of WinXP right now. Lindows is WAY cheaper.

My biggest argument is that I think developers are working too hard to turn Linux into Windows and it really shouldn't be necessary. This is another attempt to circumvent the fact that Major software players such as Adobe aren't backing Linux yet, hopefully they will sooner or later. I don't see a "Best of Both worlds" product coming out by merging Linux with Windows. I'll certainly give it a chance, but I doubt it's going to be the miracle solution.

Maybe it won't succeed, but it'll do something nobody has been able to do before.
