Do you have to pay licensing to use copyrighted fonts on a logo?

I see all these contest around with people selling customer logos with various fonts. Do you ever have to pay a licensing fee, if you use a font in your logo? Like if your tagline is written in verdana, do you have to pay royalties to use that font? Or any other font?

    Thanks

You don't need to pay to create with fonts on your computer. However, typically you are limited to selling only the work created with the font. In other words, if a customer says, "I really like that font, can you send it to me?" Your answer is "No." You can, however, direct a customer to a place where he/she can purchase the font.

So if you use a font like Palatino Linotype in a company logo, all you have to pay is a one time licensing fee to use that font, regardless of how many times you use it or where you use it?

If you need to purchase the font, then you need to pay a license fee and read the TOS before you do.

If the font is on your computer, you can generally use it in you creative work, just can't send the whole font to someone who doesn't have it.
