    Why not &daquo; and &uaquo?

&uaquo; for upward quote and &daquo for downward quote. Same for single quotes.

It's a bit late to add entity references to HTML now. However, which characters would they be replaced with? I can't find any "upward quote" or "downward quote" characters in Unicode.

Or are you suggesting to add new characters to Unicode? What's the use case for these characters?

In publishing, beginning quotes point down and end quotes point up, I think that's what he means?

It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.

i never thought of that, although itd get real annoying doing the html codes for every quotation unless you used the Design mode in Dreamweaver.
