    ? instead of index.php?

I've seen a number of sites with URLs like http://website/?act=idx... Just curious how they hide the "index.php" string. I don't think they use mod_rewrite in .htaccess in this case, so anyone know how to do it?

If index.php displays by default when you go to <yoursite>.com then you can do the same too - The server will just pass the request along to index.php
