    installing second hard drive?

I'm not sure if I can post this here, but maybe someone can point me to another resource if this isn't allowed.

I just spent a year in the UK and couldnt bring my pc back to america with me, but I brought the hard drive. Now I dont know what to do with it. I would like to install it as a secondary drive just so I can retrieve all the files off of it. Can anyone tell me how to do this, or refer me to a step by step guide on the net? I've searched and cant find anything to help me. I am a complete novice.

    thanks

Check out these good articles from respected sources: CNet, TechTV, HardwareCentral.

All articles mention at one point that you should partition and format your drive since they assume that your drive is new and does not contain any data on it. This is of course not your case, so you can (and should) skip those parts.

Btw, why could you not take the computer along with you?

Well I hope I can explain

Open up your computer and find the cable that goes to your existing H/D. (the IDE cable)

On the 'secondary' H/D look for a little tiny plastic 'jumper', or small switch. You'll probably have to change it to 'slave' or secondary slave.

about 1/2 way down the IDE cable should be another plug, whack this in your H/D the same way it goes in to your existing one (the little blue line should be closest to the edge). find a spare power cable (has 4 little plugs on it) and put that in too.

now, when you boot up, press del or whever to go into the BIOS, then select auto detect IDE harddrive, or somthing similar, you should just be able to press enter through all of it (as long as it sets it up correctly). Then save and exit

Reboot and your 'secondary H/D should be there

Also, remember that if the hard drive is a FAT32 formatted drive (Win 9x, Me) you can do all this and get your data. Unfortunatlely, the default install of both Windows 2000 and XP is NTFS and has SERIOUS security functions in it. Specifically, if you try to transplant a hard drive from an NTFS install, you will get no further than the Windows 2000 or Windows XP logo screen during bootup before it will restart. It is virtually impossible to break into it. Now both 2000 and XP can be installed as FAT32 volumes, but by default it is NTFS.
