    You alias/handle

I was just wondering where everyone gets their nic from. Most nics have a history and it is funny to hear them sometimes.

Personally I have had Maelstrom for over 15 years since I was 12 and running a BBS. I picked the name because my old alias Ariakas couldn't seem to be pronounced and I wanted one that people understood. Maelstrom worked with the BBS I was running due to its size and the fact that it was one of the best around.

    Curiosity killed the cat.

You have run that competition in the past too . I never saw the real meaning, so that means it is not yet guessed right.

Anyway, I use the nickname FireFox or Verox. FireFox basically came out of an old nick in an online game. I used the handle IceHawk there, and I wanted to change that to something that was used a lot less then IceHawk. I changed my handle to FireFox and have used it ever since.

Verox came out of a creative conversation with a friend of mine. We were thinking up names for a company we were thinking of setting up, and ended up creating cool names. I now use the handle Verox for a developers competition online.

Simple mine. The H is my initial, and has been my nickname/monika since day dot (my folks have have called me H since I was a toddler, as do my friends and most work colleagues). I was regular on many forums back in the day, and as the net was rather less populated, the "H" name or "-H-" for those that had minimum letters was fine. As things got busier, it became available less and less, and on one forum that I used regularly and was absent from for a while, it was actually stolen by one of the owners . I promptly acquired "TheOriginalH" and have stuck with it ever since......

    sad huh

Mine comes from a game called Descent3.
The main star's name is MD-1032 (more like a designation)
    MD stands for Material Defender.

Since that was the first thing i had done online, i took the Defender part of it and have been using it for about 2 years now.
The 1 is cause I couldn't register Defender when i signed up.
I searched, but found no other Defender but myself, and PM'ed Wayne about changing it to Defender, but he never responded.

As someone stated a while ago, I have used mine ever since I was a BBS junkie. I used it before it was a popular nick. Now, if I want that nick on any forums, I had better get there a week after opening, or its gone :/

In the game Tribes 2, I go by Zmodem (see? I didn't register Renegade fast enough:/)

Would the person who used to be on BBS's recognize that nick? hehe

I have had similar problems over the years. My first contact with the web was when I implemented a portal to a usenet group and grabbed a few newsgroups. I found there were already people with Maelstrom. I ended up on several occasions to use Mae1strom or Mae1str0m to compensate.

Sometimes I think of changing it but I have had it so long and through so much that changing it woudl be tough.

Please tell me you didn't steal that from the actual bbs prog.

Renegade BBS. Sister to Telegard ...

Funny thing. That was my preferred bbs software. I was going to ask but figured you play vid games with the name renegade in it .

And Zmodem oh my god I am gonna bust a gut. Memories.
