    Microsoft's Shrinking Our Lexis?

Apparently, Microsoft has removed offensive words from Word 2000's thesaurus. Words like "fool," "idiot," "imbecile," "f--k," "a--" and others have been expunged {erased, deleted, rubed out, edited out} because they upset {distressed; disturbed; troubled; offended; displeased} Microsoft's patrons {customers; clientele; regulars; consumers} who have complained about the offensive words. However, other words that may be deemed offensive, like "fat," and "ugly," remain. Go ahead try it out...

Has political correctness gone too far this time? Or, can we live with a limited vocabulary so others won't be hurt?

They have definitely gone too far.

Someone was offended so they removed the word, sorry guys, the word still exists! That's sad...

Someone else besides me that thinks the offended people are very pathetic? I mean, being offended by WORDS when people are dying in the world. Utterly pathetic.

Okay. That is rediculous. Although it does not surprise me -- Microsoft has all ready confirmed to me their stupidity over other matters -- makes sense they would do something like this.

Don't forget about the idiots, though. They probably felt offended when they checked the synonyms in Word 97 for the word "idiot." If I were them, I wouldn't like to be called moron, jerk, stupid, or dummy!

"Stupid," by the way, remains, as well. Go figure...

On a side note, I wonder how many people first thought I was talking about the automobile manufacturer Lexus {appropriately: http://lexus.com}. Maybe I should have said "Microsoft's Stealing Our Lexis?" Maybe I think too much...

Anyway and in all fairness to Microsoft, political correctness is not unique to Redmond, WA. Corporations around the globe do silly stuff like this all the time in order to avoid offending someone. It's a phenomenon of modern times.

What's Microsoft supposed to do if they receive complaints from consumers about these words? Ignore the customers? Tell them to use a Mac? Show them more words thay might take offence at? It does seem to be a difficult situation for a company.

Don't you people recognize NewSpeak when you hear it?

Get rid of all words that we don't need. Why should we have synonyms to begin with? Isn't one descriptor enough for everyone? Why have superior, first-class and excellent when good, plusgood and double plusgood are enough?

Creole, if you don't like synonyms, then stay clear away from indonesian: that language just has tons of them.

And ahah @ the 1984 reference

1984 was an interesting book -- didn't much enjoy the ending, however, Orwell still made some interesting points.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is another intersting read that kind of follows along the same distopian theme as 1984, albeit from a different viewpoint.

I never did understand the NewSpeak language however -- it was, as Renegade noted, simply replacing words with an equal amount of other words that lacked originality.

It's replacing three (and many more) words with one word (and modifiers). Good replaces all of the other words with simple modifiers to indicate how strong the users feelings about that.

    So good is good
    Superlative might be Plus-good
    Fantastic might be double plus-good

    In the same way

    bad
    plus-bad
    double plus-good

So you replace a whole slew of words with just two. At the cost of creativity and individuality.
