Most compatible way to do auto-redirect?

I'm building a simple system to handle incoming clicks. i.e. something like http://blah.com/in.php?referrer=blah I have no problem handling this request, but I want to auto-redirect to the main page so the URL they see is generic. I have been using meta refresh tags to do this, but I was wondering if it is more compatible to use the Location: header. Also, is one method better than the other regarding google bots that crawl sites and might ignore a site if it uses meta-refresh? THANKS!

Yes, use a purely server-side solution if possible - it avoids affecting your search ranking, and also won't break the back-button. Alternatively get a stats package (Mint, Google Analytics, etc.) that handles all that referrer stuff for you.
