    Tips 4 Getting More Responses

Well, this is self-compiled and off-the-top of my head.

In essence, I know we all want lots of responses to the threads we start but there are some guidelines which will enable you to get responses in topics besides religion and php vs asp.

    1. Don't respond to every answer
    2. Don't do too many private off-topic jokes
    3. Don't simply say "okay, we're getting off-topic"
    4. Don't beg for
    5. Don't bump, ttt, or otherwise bring your thread back to the top of the page simply to get more responses

    6. Do check up on the thread, if there are questions for you, answer them.
    7. Do acknowledge helpful and relevant advice and information
    8. Do read links
    9. Do take advice to heart
    10. Do want to get information

Thanks guys. I think it's good to be reminded of these things off and on. There are as many, if not more, things that need to be adhered to in an online community as there are in a normal world situation. Social interactions always need to be considered for the betterment of the community.

    Thanks again.

#1 is the worst for me... I'm always tempted to answer every response to my own threads, but it quelches them.

Awesome! I love Capstone!! Too bad they pretty much stay mostly in Canada! I'm trying to possibly get them down here to Baltimore, but it's slow going.

Thanks for the tip on them. When are they going to be there?

The subject line is also very important. Don't just write "Help!" or "NN hates me!". Most people don't even bother reading threads like this. Try to come up with something that describes the problem instead (like: "How do I remove the spaces around my forms?").

    Very good advice, Jeremy W.

"1. Don't respond to every answer"

My theory: "I responded to a thread started by that Jimknee guy and gave him some good links- and he didn't respond! That big jerkface!"

"5. Don't bump, ttt, or otherwise bring your thread back to the top of the page simply to get more responses"

My theory: If a thread gets to the bottom of the first page, it's pretty much history!

I honestly think that some threads get lost because people who *would* have responded weren't surfing for two days in general chat(or other forum) and the thread sunk out of site. There are threads that I would've loved to respond to, but they sunk because the thread starter never posted in them again. Then there are the threads where I contribute, but the starter says absolutely nothing. So I'll post a note like: "Update?" I truly wonder in those threads if I've actually helped.

I see what you are saying about bumping- it might bother people. On the other hand, I'm not sure how to keep the thread 'floating' long enough for intermittent posters to see it.

Ok, enough 'thread theory' from me. You make a lot of good points. Speaking of threads, would you check this thread and see how I'm doing?

And feel free to post links! (I am *not* begging you! )

    There are general rules

Essentially as a thread started it is your responsibility to ensure that conversation flows, that you don't quelch the discussion and that people are free to have fun

#12. Don't become angry with other posters even if they say something you don't like. Remember, they're posting for your benefit.
#13. Don't call other members names or insinuate name calling.
    #14. Don't insult others.
#15. Be thankful of all advice given to you.
    #16. Don't jump to conclusions.

    And most importantly...

    #17. Do enjoy yourself.

#19. Ban Jeremy W. for making such a ridiculous request. Everyone here knows that I am the SitePoint God. I painted my house with SP colors and member names for crying out loud! So if you want your name to stay on my house, worship me and only me. Jeremy W. is just a snivelling brat looking for attention... infidel!

    Marina,

Great suggestion! I always scan posted subjects before deciding if I want to read the posts. Non-descriptive subjects are a pet peeve for me.

I have a hard time not lashing back when someone is being rude and calling people names. Got to work on that.

    Jeremy,

    Great topic for discussion!

#20) Don't post excessively long starters--get to your question(s) quickly, but be descriptive.

#21) Post the thread in the appropriate forum.

#22) Respond vigorously to all threads started by Ian Glass, such as:#23) Cross-promote.

    #24) [DEL] Do not ask Swimm to join the discussion, just for the "shock-value". [/DEL] {omitted do to change in avatar}

Theses guidelines now comply with mmj section 1, #26a. They have been spell-checked.

If somebody else makes a mistake, don't mention it in public. Leave it to the mentors and advisors to conduct in private.

    #26)

Don't make more than three spelling or grammatical errors in any one line or you risk making me angry.

    #27)

Don't worry too much about following these rules closely. We are very friendly to new members, we realise that it takes a while to get used to these forums and we will help you as much as we can.

well said mmj, especially about not adhering. After all we're a community of friends and in some places more like "family". We aren't going to kick anyone out, refer anyone to these rules or whatever.

To me, these are things I keep pinned to my mental fridge. It enables me instead of limiting me
