How come on SitePoint.com and websites like www.alistapart.com , the heading fonts are very smooth and crisp, however when I try to use heading font sizes (14+ px) mine get real jaggedy and ugly. How do they smooth out the fonts? Is there anything special they are doing? What fonts come out smooth at heading sizes? I have tried a bunch with no luck. Thanks.
Yes, most (if not all) web-safe fonts on Windows will stay jaggedy up to 17px. This applies to the normal weight, and with fonts like Tahoma and Verdana, the bold as well.
Trebuchet MS and Arial will anti-alias the bold at a size as low as 11/12px.
