    Hi,
I'm currently designing a website for the city where I live, with backing of the Council and Tourist Board. I recently posted this message, asking for ideas as to what sort of content I should include.

Thanks for all the posts so far, please keep them coming! Maybe
I should have been more specific in what I have so far. At present
    I have sections for;
Accommodation, Council, Education, Events, History, Leisure
Pubs, Restaurants, Services, Shopping & Transport.

I'm also going to incorporate Chat into the site, allowing people from
the city (it's a Scottish one!) to chat with others who may stop
by on the site. I'm looking for any other sort of content, like the stuff that's on Portals if you catch my drift, Any other ideas?

For a start try browsing other websites like your own: a lot of cities/town/communities have websites. Things to add could be local transportation information, special events, community events, town newsletter or newspaper (if they have one), points of interest. Maybe historical background, museums, whatever else you have there that people might be interested in.

    hope this helps,

What printed material do they already have and pass out. Think of each article/category as a potential for your webpages. Ask the printer for this information on disk. It's already been proofed and can be cut/pasted into a webpage.

Remember, however, viewers have a shorter attention span than readers so shorten it up and let the graphics speak for themselves.

You did not post where in the word this city is, but what about things like:

vote for the best local pub
    garage/yard sale locator
"focus page" about an extra-ordinary person who live in the town (one a month)

and a place for kids to post an add for their road-side lemonade stand during the summer

You might look into some of the affiliate sites. Off the top of my head, you might look into Excite's affiliate program. They offer quite a bit of customizable content and also gets your site in for the SmartAds banner ad group.

    Good Luck!

I have a site similar to your. I find that all the information you are proposing works really well, especially for the first time visitor who might be goign there on holiday. However, there is NOTHING, and I really mean nothing, like a regular newsletter to keep your visitors loyal and interested.
