Upgrading to XP

Ok, I have Win98 Second Edition and I just purchased the full version of WinXP Pro. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to give me a step by step guide on how to upgrade to XP Pro. What should I look out for, etc..

Any help is greatly appreciated

Just make sure you back up *all* your important files. Check your folders, anything archived for your sites, and favorites/bookmarks. Check twice.

Then go for it! XP will step you through the process. (You can use Fdisk to wipe out 98 and re-format, but it's not necessary.)

thanks for your reply, I have setup my computer to be a dual boot system with 98SE and XP Pro. I was wondering if I have to login every time with XP, or is there a way to bypass that?

Login to XP everytime, yes it is a feature the NT has always used for security reasons, and seeing that windows 2000 and Xp are built on this architecture the login is part of it.

I'm on Win2k and if you *don't* enter a password, you won't be asked for a password at startup. The password box will be displayed, but it will be 'greyed out'.

To change password at any time hit Ctrl> Alt> Del> Change Password. (this is in Win2k)

here's a nice tip. Before you install, put the XP CD in while in Win98. It should autostart. Select Compatibility test and verify thart all your hardware and software will work. If there's something that doesn't work, ask yourself if it is critical that you get updated drivers/software before you upgrade. You may have to actually physically remove hardware that isn't supported until you get a new driver. Chances are Windows XP will just pass right over it, but there's a chance (as in the case of my soundcard) that it won't ignore it then it will conflict with the rest of the system. Good luck!

Actually I set it up this way as you can do this with most other operating systems. I created a small partition for XP on my harddrive, so it would not overwrite any of my Win98 files, as I still need some of them. Then it wrote to my master boot record (which is when you startup your computer your mbr tells your computer what OS to boot to.), and I setup that it would ask me WinXp Pro or Win98.

Wow a lot of good information guys, marc thanks for that link. I use CuteFTP as my FTP client, and I saw that it is not XP ready as of yet, I was wondering if I upgrade, will I lose the ability to use cuteftp?

I'm using CuteFTP Pro and it is working fine with XP.
