ok, lets think this through. 1 million dollars, well the goverments going to take a chunk of that change. You'll be left with about $700,000 (give or take). Now you can put that in a savings account. Lets say you get a saving account that draws 5% interest (i dont know what interest rates are now, but 5 is a nice easy number to work with). that means you will be drawing $35,000 a year in interest. That's not wealty, but you can live on it. Of course the goverment is going to take a chunk of that change too. Probable leave you with $25,000 a year (rough estimate).
So the real question is how far would you go for a steady income of $25,000 a year(after taxes), that you don't have to work for?

If you put the million straight into an IRA the gov't couldn't touch it, then you would only have to pay money on the interest

ok ok... so then at 5% interest we draw $50,000 in interest a year. Which isn't half bad. The government will take about 30% of that. so you are left with $35,000 a year after taxes. Not bad.

So how far would you go for a steady income of $35,000 a year(after taxes), that you don't have to work for?

    I personally wouldn't quit work for $1,000,000.

After taxes, you are left with $700,000 (rough estimate), plus $35,000 a year after taxes (as figured out earlier).

Why do nothing and get only $35,000 a year when you have $700,000 in funding to start a new business and make a few hundred thousand dollars a year? Plus you have $35,000 a year extra in funding basically for life.

Maybe I'm too technical, but that's what I'd do.

to touch on delemtri's post, most people, i forget the exact statistic, but it was defenitely a lot greater than 50%. are effected negatively by winning the lottery..

There is someone in my friends family who won the lottery for someting like 5 million dollars, but he is miserable, greedy, didn't share any of his money, and is generally the black sheep of his family.

I wouldn't deform my body in any way (like cutting of limbs). I might consider a scar in the face, but not more.

I could have sex with anyone for a million $, except family and females with male genitalia.

I could probably kill someone for a million bucks, if it was a "bad" person, and I could somehow get away from the law afterwars. I.e. I could probably kill the man who invented the punch-the-monkey banner, for instance.

Come to think of it, it was actually not a person who invented the tie. Ties just "evolved" out of scarves. Around 1924 ties started to pop up, so I believe that you would need to go back around that time and kill every one of the stupid idiots who started the darn trend.

Instead of going back in time and killing someone (a thoroughly negative idea), why not instead go on strike, so to speak, and not wear one?

I like to do that -- when I'm supposed to wear a tie (like school functions [when not in a suit, mind you -- then I do wear a tie], but at some non-suit event where ties are supposed to be worn), it is fun to show up without one.
