How do I get backlinks from my own website to appear as links?
We were looking at some of our competitors' links (and to call these people competitors is totally ridiculously complimentary to us) and we see that many of their "links" are really links within their own page.
How do we make this happen?
P.S. ...just to clarify
Because I think I make sense to people and I often don't I'll clarify although I think I probably don't need to. What I'm talking about is the majority of the links shown here in this example http://www.google.com/search?q=link:...&start=20&sa=N

You don't do anything. It just happens.

interesting ... I think what he is asking is this:
a,
link:www.contemporaryfurniture.com
b,
link:www.kultic.com
c,
site:www.kultic.com
In case a there are 100s of links displayed from the same domain:
contemporaryfurniture.com/Catalog/Products/...
Case b shows a few links from other domains linking to his site.
Case c shows similiar results for his domain as case a.
So I think the question is why the link: operator returns links from the same domain in case a but doesn't in case b, although the links are there (case c).

a) shows the number of backlinks to that site. The majority of them are internal.
b) shows the number of backlinks to that site. The majority are external.
c) is not comparable - all it is doing is showing all the pages in that site that are indexed.
It makes complete sense that they are all different.UX Mastery - A community exclusively for UXers

The question is why the link operator is returning internal links for the contemporary furniture site but not returning any internal links for the kultic site.

IMO all of the pages that he has indexed and which link back to kultic.com can be considered internal links.

It's just frustrating because I don't get why they appear like that for our store in the first place.

why do you link back to your homepage with
Code:<a href="/"><img src="templates/kultic/img/int/logo.gif...
Maybe one of the veterans could comment on what effect, if any, that has on seo.

As far as I know backlinks shown in the tools or in the google under certain request are not being shown all due to "unknown" reasons.
