    Mandrake slower than XP?

I have been running Mandrake 8.1 for about a week now and I have two gripes. One, when you open the browser multiple times, you have to click on the program in the toolbar and then select the window you want to switch to (kinda like the start menu in windows). I am using KDE desktop.

Secondly, It seems to run slower than XP. I thought linux was supposed to be faster! Hmmm. Maybe I am just imagining things as I have no way of benchmarking my machine yet.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone has the same gripes as me.

It takes ages to start, I have not used it all that much yet, I have been getting XP set up again

Linux is faster and more reliable, or so I've heard. However, KDE is not linux at all.

I know KDE isn't linux, its an X window environment. But, it seems slower than windows. Windows could be fast at a command line too.

KDE has never really run well in Mandrake... I don't know why but it just hasn't. Try running Gnome or E and seeing if that helps. Try opening a browser window and then hitting F11 to open another instead of starting a whole new one.

    F11? I will try that!

KDE doesn't seem to run right at all. I tried Enlightenment, but I dont like the interface. I hat holding down a button and clicking the mouse to get a menu to pop up.

I switched to Gnome last night and it seems to be a bit faster. I only used it for a couple hours though, so I can't compare just yet.

What about other Desktop environments like WindowMaker?

Not sure if anyone's tried this one out, haven't heard much about it. I use it myself though on RH6.2, so far it's pretty good.

Windowmaker isn't bad at all! Try that or GNOME and see which one you like better... It is mostly all about personal preference.
