    Miles and Kilometres

Why do some countries go with miles and the others with kilometres? Also, why do some countries drive on the left and others on the right?

They drive on the wrong side of the road (ie, the right hand side) because most of those countries are in the northern hemisphere where things are backwards like the way water goes down the plug hole

According to Bill Bryson's book Made In America-

During the closing years of the eighteenth century, the covered wagons built to negotiate Americas Great Road connecting Philadelphia with the mouth of the Conestogas River, first called freighters and later to be known as Conestogas after the Pennsylvania town where they were built, were built with there breaks and their "lazy boards" on the left hand side. If there was a particular reason for putting them there, it has since been forgotten. With drivers compelled to sit on the left, they tended to drive on the right so that they were positioned near the centre of the road, which is why, it appears, Americans abandoned the British custom of driving on the left.

Wow that's right in the dead centre of Australia.

You know, Australia's often referred to as 'down under' but we're really a lot closer to the equator than the USA, or of course, all of europe... We're cooking down here!

I'm guessing it wouldn't be hard to find a particular person in Renmark.

BTW I'm only making fun - no hard feelings. How big is Renmark anyway?

Wow - well I take that comment back. I was thinking it was more like 1000. I originally come from a town of 10,000 people.

Yeah - it's a bit smaller than Melbourne.

And for a moment there I got confused between east and west. I don't know why but I pictured it being over the other side of adelaide.

Well it sounds like we are in a very similar position. I come frm Hamilton which has a KFC, McDonalds, in fact it now has a La Porchetta's. And I lived in a small township of about 500 just out of Hamilton.

It's stems back a long long way and is to do with right handedness. As a traveler or soldier was walking down the road and met an agressor coming the other way their sword arm (right) was in a position of attack if it was needed.

This is also the reason we shake with the right hand as a form of friendly greeting, if you are holding a persons right hand they can't do you in with the sword

That's a funny comment. I remember driving through Missouri and thinking "Doesn't anyone in this state drive normal!"
