Can anyone tell me what it is about frameworks like Prototype that is so great.
What kind of useful methods does it have and where can I find detailed documentation on it.

Prototype isn't a framework. It's just a library (collection) of useful classes and functions that simplify common – and often error-prone – tasks.

You can download the library plus all the documentation from prototype.conio.net.
