They might be rolling out a beta test to a random sample of people.

While I like the new look, it still suffers from portal syndrome. Of course, with all the content Yahoo provides I don't think categorizing it all will ever be done in the most effective way possible.

I know that this week they introduced their Yahoo Mail Beta but unfortunately they're blocking Opera users from using it, so I guess I'll have to stick to the old format.

The page is live at http://www.yahoo.com/preview

I too agree it's a big improvement, lots of information nicely organised and not too cluttered. Nice grapical theme and the necessary (buzzword alert) Ajax techniques!

Richard MacManus has a podcast about it too interviewing Yahoo! Chief Product Officer Ash Patel and Vice President of Front Doors Tapan Bhat. http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives...sive_new_y.php

They also have an option under Page Options where you can switch to narrow layout and a variety of colors. I like the new look overall

It's an improvement, though cluttered like most portal sites are.

    Cluttered yuk.

I never visit portal pages anymore, I already found most of what I am looking for. The firefox search makes going to their pages to search just a waste of time.

I really like the new face of Yahoo, it is a definate improvement over the old one. Being a portal site I guess this is as good as any.

They have designed for a 1024 x 768 screen size, I guess it is official, if your 800 x 600 you better get with the times.

P.S. I have noticed that there are only 25% of users still at 800 x 600. the rest are 1024 x 768 (50%) and up.

I have about 40 sites with stats that I compile the results from.

    Thanks

Not sure how to break the news to you, but well, Y! is a portal. And not just any old portal, a pretty major portal. Given the vast amount of content they have not even counting their search engine data, the new front page is fairly lean. I suppose a much simpler page like Google or Ask.com would work if the majority of their focus was their search engine, but that hasn't appeared to be the case for some time now.

I like the new look, it has a much "lighter" feel to it and seems to flow better than the current design.

I did, but I'm sure glad you didn't even read mine. The point was how can one say that a portal suffers from "portal syndrome". It is a portal! It cannot infect itself with itself. That is akin to saying that Apple Computers suffers from "Mac design syndrome" or that the flu suffers from the flu virus. It makes very little sense to say that. Only a site that is not a portal could suffer from "portal syndrome". What makes a site a portal or not could be a topic of great debate, but Yahoo! most certainly is one, on this I'm sure all can agree.

    Huge step backwards. Hate it.

    Yahoo's current page is nice.

This page is boring, cold and unfriendly. It's like some member of management designed it.

I was curious about this b/c on my 15 inch screen there is no scroll. They have CSS set at minimum and maximum widths, min-width:950px and max-width:1250px.

So really, they are still working on the smaller screen resolutions.
