Employing a programmer for the first time

    Hey there

We're a small time business who got lucky with a large website and we want to employ someone to be an inhouse PHP coder for the duration of 3 months in our Coventry (UK) offices, BUT as we're not experts with PHP ourselves, what sort of questions should I be asking them to ensure they are the muts nuts. What sort of pay would a programmer expect for a 32 hour week for 4 weeks.

How hard is it to get hold of one? Where would be the best place to advertise. Cheers for your help guys

    Calum

Having in house php coder is nice since you have better view of what is going on, plus your files can be well protected under firewall.

However putting yourself into position to relay only on local programmers can have very limited levels of php expertise.

Interested in php program (all the appropriate php questions) that will quiz your future employees for a very small price? You can pm me or email me and we can arrange everything :-)

Start your search on craigslist.com you'll find someone there.
For questions, here are some ideas:

What kind of experience do you have in development? Tell me about how you delegate / deliver info to creative / tech /other project managers (choose appropriate)

Tell me about the development processes / SDLC that you have been involved with? Where were their short comings?

Tell me about you’re your experience in developing technical specifications?

What is a ‘day in the life’of a project?
How has a project been handed off from Project Managers to you?
How did you prepare for the initial (“kickoff”) meetings?
    How did you follow up?
    How did you mark milestones?
How did you deliver the project?

How do you interact with other team members on a specific project?

How did you QA your work?

How did you close / wrap up a project?

Did you work on multiple projects at a time? Describe how you keep track of the projects and all associated activities?

Tell me a time when what was promised is beyond what company can deliver - how did you tell the client?

… How did you tell your manager / team lead?

…..You needed to educate a client about the technology involved?

Tell me a time when you disagreed with a co-worker – what happened and how was it resolved?

When you had to speak up to get an important point heard with a supervisor

… Time you were able to build motivation in co-workers?

Tell me about a time someone just dropped a project on you – what did you do? When you didn’t have time to this project?

    What hours do you work?

Tell me a time you successfully communicated with someone you didn’t like (coworker, then client)

Tell me a time you successfully communicated with someone who didn’t like you (coworker, then client)

What disappointments have you had in other jobs?

How would you compare this job to your current job?

    What are your long-term goals?

How would you evaluate an offer from us (what factors will be important)?

When have you been told about a problem in work performance, what have you done?

    Give me an example.

Tell me what you would have liked to have accomplished at your last position, but didn’t.
