    installing MySQL

    i am working on sparc-sun-solaris 2.6, and when i

    % tar xvf mysql-3.23.43.tar.gz

    all i get is

    tar: directory checksum error

mysql.com says that i should possibly use gnu tar to unpack this file, but im not really sure what that is, and even though i know where to get the file i don't really know what to do with it. anyone?

you need a - before the x in xvf, your command should read as follows:

    tar -xvf mysql-3.23.43.tar.gz
--There's my 1.5 cents, now where is my change!?!?

Sorry Renegade, you do need that but on Solaris you also need to use gnu tar. You can get from http://www.sunfreeware.com/

There are instructions on how to install onthe site, kinda like a linux RPM.
Please don't PM me with questions.
Use the forums, that is what they are here for.

You don't *need* a - before the options when you are using GNU tar...don't know about Solaris's tar Also, since you are working with a .tar.gz file, you need tar to give it to gzip first. So, the command should be:

    tar xzfv mysql-3.23.43.tar.gz

(the z is for unzip; xfv just tells it to untar a file, printing each file as it goes, not to un-gzip first)

Yes. Here is the exact link since apparently you haven't solved your problem yet:

    http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlist.html#tar

    Installation instructions are at http://www.sunfreeware.com/download.html
