Keeping my scripts under my name

Hi, Im writing a database and it's going to be free for anyone to download but I don't want someone putting there name on it and saying they wrote it.

Is there any scripts around that have this legal docs? and how would one go about writing it?

    Thanks.

You are writing your own database? Will it be better than Oracle?

    You've got a couple choices.

    1) Use an open source licence such as the GPL. It protects you rights along with giving freedom to the people who use it.

    2) Use a closed source licence that will allow you to retain stricter control over how the software is used

With option 2 its probably best to write you own licence using other closed source licences as a template. If you want to go true open source then the GPL is the way to go.

However, although both protect your copyright on the software, neither will stop someone from trying to pass it off as their own. If someone wants to pretend its theirs they will you just have to be vigalint and watch out for violators.

Since you're giving it away free I suggest you check out the Open Source Initutives listing of open software licences: http://www.opensource.org/licenses/

    theFinn, Thanks for your reply.

I think the option is to leave it opensource and maybe later make a change so I can track the usage of the script.

    Thanks again.
