Sorry - I haven't read all the above posts but here are my thoughts:

I don't really care what boxers say about current affairs. When I want to know what is happening in the world, I would not turn to a boxer. Boxers are not news reporters and why should they know anything about current affairs?

It isn't in any way related to his boxing career. It's just related to his stupidity. I think that stripping him of his title because of his religious or stupid comments, unrelated to boxing, is a bit harsh. I can understand him losing his sponsors, or his fans, or his respect, but taking an authoritative hand to his title is a bit racist.

However, given that I could not care less what a boxer says or does, I don't really care what the boxing industry says or does. I'm not going to cry a river over a boxer being treated badly by the boxing industry.

I didn't hear the full text of what mundine said, and I was only assuming that his comments were religious in nature. I realise that religion and race are not related, but having an intolerance for a particular religion is loosely known as being 'racist'. Therefore I was only making an assumption that racism was a factor in this unfair decision. But like I said, I didn't pay much attention and don't care much about boxers

He was punished for what he said, not who he is or his religious views.

He flat out stated America deserved the attacks, that we had it comming. In no uncertain terms.

Again, not racist. He was careless in his speech and was punished. I think justice has been served.

    mmj,

In general I agree with you. I too couldn't less about boxers or boxing. Harsh, perhaps, yes. But then, I don't know the rules and regulations of the group. If they were violated, maybe it wasn't too harsh. On the other hand, I do agree that he has a right to free speech, no matter how stupid that speech is. By the way, they did the same thing to Mohammad Ali, when he changed his name and became Muslem and he was generally aknowledged as one of the greatest boxers of all time. I did think that was wrong at the time.

I do disagree with you when you say that "having an intolerance for a particular religion is loosely known as being 'racist'."

To me, intollerance for a religion is not even remotely, much less "loosely" tied to racism. At least now I know why I couldn't understand other comments you have made referring to racism! You definitely do interpret it differently! At least you do, as compared to the way I interpret it.

Do we have a culture or a generation gap here?

I don't know - maybe it's just an mmj gap!

Seriously, I meant no harm by it. I can't figure out what to call it when somebody is treated poorly according to religious behaviour and I know it's not racism...

Some local (Australian media) cases of arson or other attacks against muslim communities following september 11 have been described as 'racist', for example.

    mmj,

I believe we are closing in on the "mmj" and "allie" gaps.

Never thought you meant any harm. Must admit that using "racist" in the context that you have used it did cause me to misunderstand what you were saying at times.

I just call it "religious intolerance". People of the same religion can be of any race.
