    Referal Contest: experiences?

    Hi,
i am running a Mountainbike-related Community and am thinking about running a referal contest - so these are my questions:
    - who already tried to do this?
    - what are your experiences with a contest like this?
    - pros / cons

    Some Details:
I thought about running this contest for 4 weeks, after this period y would select the winners randomly from all referals - Prices would be:
äh t-shirts (with my sites logo) which are normally sold
probably Stickers (also with my sites Logo..)
    Thanks for all your answers
    Tom

btw - the Shirts look like this

I think it would be a lot safer to have a referal system where they're not considered a referal until they've been active for 7 days. This would prevent a lot of false referals, and it would only reward based on quality referals.

By the way, are those shirts from CafePress? Those are pretty nice!

    Yes- shirts look great.

Maybe have a grand prize also? Doesn't have to be expensive. A video on mountain biking or a magazine subscription? That might increase the incentive.

thank you both for your ideas - i guess i will do something like this
The video-thing sounds best to me.. - perhaps I will not count nonposting referred people - a little bit of sql will check this out

The Shirts were designed by a member of my community, printed at a local T-Shirt manufacturer and are distributed by me - cafepress seems to be too expensive to me (most orders are from germany & Austria)

The backs print size is A3 (this is large..)

Good luck with your contest. Your shirts look great. If I was into biking I would definitely be entering your contest.

Excellent shirts... I'm impressed with them, I think that I may do the referal contest for one of those. Actually, I think that your forums should do extremely well with a referal contest, however, you'll find that referals are hard to come by in such a targeted community, because what I've noticed with my experience in BMX biking that generally, these are people that do these hobbies by themselves or with one friend and they are generally already a member of their forums and chats... but some of them do have pretty good downlines of people... so who knows.. let us know what happens with it, I'm sort of curious as to the results...
