If you don't already know it (which by the sounds of it, you don't), start off with HTML.
Make sure you can grasp the very simplist aspect of web development before you start trying to make a career out of it.

I'd recommend w3schools as an excellent starting point for this, and many other facets web design.

Besides HTML as trib4lmaniac mentioned (or more specifically XHTML), you need to learn CSS, PHP and MySQL at the very least to be a professional web developer.

Although the last two are a matter of choice. You are not forced to use PHP or MySQL specifically, or even at all. But static pages are boring

    A complete web developer knows:

    1. Server Side coding (most popular and useful are PHP and MySQL)
    2. Page Design (CSS + XHTML)
    3. Server-Side Administration (.htaccess tricks)
    (Optional)4. Client-Side coding (Javascript / AJAX)
