    Karma in practice

Well, I'm currently buildning my first "real" website, and I'm currently customizing a vBulletin forum, and have a karma hack, made by a guy named overgrow in place. It seems good... in theory.

I'm hesitating whether karma is good or bad in practice? I've heard very bad things. The karma system on sitepoint was obviously for some reason - why? Also, I've heard lots of complaining from folks about the karma system on slashdot. Nobody has ever really explained to me what is the problem though, and I have been satisfied myself, browsing the posts at 2+.

So, I'd like to hear some first hand experience on this matter:

    1. Is karma good or bad?
    2. If it is bad, is it possible to make it work, and if so, how?
    3. Where does karma work?
    4. Where does karma not work?

Dang, I guess this particular forum is not very used, which is sad. Can anyone help, please, or do I have to repost this in another forum?

Hi there, I can't really help you because I've not used Karma before.

The best person to ask about it would probably be Overgrow. He is very happy with it and speaks well of it, I think.

Overgrow has written about karma in depth, you can do a search for the word 'karma' here and find some of his posts.

Here is Wayne's explanation for why the Karma system (in its original form) is no longer in use here at Sitepoint:

I think the main point is that karma allowed negative feedback to cancel out positive feedback, making it too easy to 'lose'.
