I closed this thread initially as I was only aware of the paid services offered by LookSmart, and if that were the case, to find a way to get listed without paying would be against their terms - something SitePoint does not condone.

However, it has been pointed out to me that LookSmart does have a legitimate means of getting listed without payment - through joining the Zeal community, a link to which can be found at the bottom of the page.

You can only get into Zeal if your website is non-commercial. Otherwise, you have to pay to get in to LookSmart.

When you say non-commercial, do you include sites that make their money purely from advertising (affiliate programmes and the like) or just those which sell some kind of service or product?

I'm not 100% sure, but I guess if you use your site to make money in any way, it's deemed commercial.

I'd check though if you wanna be certain.

Only if your site is selling something. And even then you can still get in.

In the guidelines they mention that for a site that sells something to get in it needs to have a great deal of content in relationship to it's products.

SitePoint sells books, yet it is still acceptable because of all the content.

Sites that sell advertising are acceptable.

If you are listed in Inktomi, there is a possibility of showing up in LS. LS uses Ink results when it has none (or little) of its own results to pull from.

Note: This is only for the search and not the directory itself.
