SNS: BuddyZone vs PhpFox...anyone have any thoughts?

I've been going back and forth between the two for ages. From the outside, they look fairly comparable to me, but I can't see 'under the hood'. Does anyone have any thoughts they'd like to share on either application?

Well... I can say I purchased PHPFox and it looks much better than BuddyZone... MUCH better. The Support was EXCELLENT at first but lately it has been below average, if not terrible. Another bad thing about PHPFox is the Admin Panel is completely Zend Encoded - as well as some of the functions... actually maybe all? But to be fair - I'm still glad I purchased it over BuddyZone. I think MySpace is one of the ugliest sites on the net and I think Buddy Zone beats MySpace in that department. Neither one has Artist Accounts either... which is a major downfall.

    Tell me about it.
I've spent the past few days with an account trying to 'see' why it's so 'hot'...but I fail to see it.

    Maybe it's because I'm not a teenager...

I'd say PHPfox..but I don't really care for any program that is Zend Encoded.

I also, just have to say, I agree with the whole, MySpace having an ugly layout - and I'm in there main demographic target.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what does Zend Encoded mean exactly? Is this a bad thing?

I haven't the foggiest idea what it means, either.

Havent tried all aspects just yet

Let me know what you think

Zend encoded means that you cant see or edit the php code (it does not look like php code when you open the file)

Zend Encoded means you can't edit the script. Sometimes it's nice to be able to tweak the code to suit your site, and pages that are encoded aren't tweakable.

In the case of PHPfox, only some pages are encoded and you can still edit most of the scripts.

Also, fyi, the folks at PHPfox say that they're working on a Myspace-like artist/music area, but no ETA yet so I imagine it's at least a few months away.

They are supposed to be coming out with ALICIA soon. It will replace phpIzabi.

I've heard great things about Alicia, but haven't seen anything. Is there a beta site, or screenshots, or anything?

No. It was supposed to have come out this past week, but rumor has it that there some some delay (unrelated to the programming.)

Your guess is as good as mine, as to when it's coming out.

Me? I've kind of given up. I'm waiting for the vBulletin/MySpace-style mod

I own 2 vBulletins but I'm not sure if I'm too interested in the hack... I guess because of the fact that so many popular hacks always fall off when you really need them... ehhh who knows, maybe it will be good.

Yes, the Zend Encoding stuff is B.S. in my opinion and I've just asked them (PHPFox) to give me decoded files or "unencrypted" files so I can add my Music/Artist accounts. They say they're working on a new artist account but I've already built a pretty solid version over the past 2 weeks... I guess we'll see if I can get away with adding it into the Admin Panel - if they give me those files lol

phpizabi is okay. I DO like the cleanliness of it but not the overall program. Maybe ALICIA will be much better? If so, I'll create some other community with it since I have plans to anyways...

I'm waiting for Alicia as well

And just to clarify, Alicia will be 100 percent unencrypted.

And sorry Mickmel, there is no beta site or screenshots, to date.

What do you mean? (I've had vBulletin for about 4 years, and have only had issues with hacks when vBulletin does MAJOR upgrades.)

    Greetings,

Clenard says, "Neither one has Artist Accounts either... which is a major downfall" which is not entirely true, Buddy Zone has a music artist signup (I am not sure of other competitors scripts though) and different profile for musicians, well if you go to the demo you see a music link on top if you are not logged in you will get this link:http://www.vastal.com/buddy_new_chan...sic_signup.php, which is for the musicians to signup, on the contrary we have also provided mp3 uploads and running mp3 on musician profile in flash mp3 player, but it is given on a customers request since not everyone wants to get into that arena.

Clenard says, "I think MySpace is one of the ugliest sites on the net and I think Buddy Zone beats MySpace in that department" This is a script we are selling not the design, and if someone likes the basic design they can use it, if not they can redesign it, like they want, but we beleive in making a script's base more strong rather than adding flashy things into it, some live site designs were done by us, if we can create a design for them we sure can create a design for the demo as well but we beleive that when we write a script, which when used by 100 customers should not look the same, so see the live sites some of the designing is done by us, some by customers themselves. They are listed on http://www.vastal.com/buddy-zone-soc...ng-script.html. If someone is still not convinced ask us for more live sites which have design changed. Anyways, I just wanted to make clear that Buddy Zone does have musician signup as stated above. Thanks Again!!!

Never mind my question a few posts ago...I know what you mean now. (I don't know what I was thinking...)

    Anyway...

I decided not to wait for the hack. By the time I REALLY figured out what I needed, i realized I could do it with vBA and PPC - personals integrated into vB. From there I'm adding just a few minor hacks and voila' - I'm done.

Oops, sorry about not responding to this. I completely forgot about it until someone linked to it on PHPFox.

Yeah, I meant that vB hacks that get really huge tend to have so many problems that they fall off... but after looking into the vBulletin hack you're speaking of - it seems there's approximately 5 guys working on the hack. So, with that being said, it might be pretty solid.

I believe PHPFox will be releasing some more code which is a good start but hopefully more becomes available over the next month or so as well.

    Hi funducoder,

Don't get me wrong... I think overall your package is pretty well done but it still "erks" me to say the least. The Musicians signup/accounts are okay but nothing that I would call "professional". The Basic design is sloppy, much like myspace, which is what you were going for but I'm sure a good designer can put in some work and make it look decent - such as www.thestreetspace.com (pretty fast growing site). I just look at sites like www.everyonespace.com and think "yuck", if not worse lol...

Overall, I will be honest when I say I would have never purchased it over PHPFox but at the same time - I chose PHPFox because I thought it was the full code... not encrypted.

The Support at PHPFox has been good overall... they fell off but that's because they lost a few fuys during the last few months but lately have been pretty active. I have heard bad things about Vastal Support, along with sloppy code... but that's just what I heard, I could be completely wrong.

Thanks for the reply and good luck with BuddyZone! Who knows, I may give it a shot in a month or two

I have a feeling that Alicia won't be released for a while... probably around the time when everyone with vbulletin already has a social networking script, looking for something better lol

Not by default. You have to do it by yourself or get a coder to do this for you.

That's my feeling, too. I gave up on Alicia, and just built my own. They work fine, and there's no learning curve.

    Hello Clenard,

I am not here to fight or say anything. BTW, my point was you should not judge a pre packaged software with just the looks of it, www.everyonesspace.com is using our software and it is there liking they did not change the design, but some do, like www.mytribalspace.com, what I am proud of is one thing, unlike the competitors scripts "I won't name" lol, legal problems, our script when customized looks almost completely different and can be as flexible to be used for a film community, for a music community, for a dating community or for a escorts community, the opportunities are endless. No one has had that much different types of sites launched, if you can show me one url of my competitors scripts which looks completely different than what there demo is instead of the colors, I will be greatful, as of now I have not seen any, but I can show you many urls of our script which have completely different concept and design like escorts community, or music community or a film community as stated above, if you are interested I can show them to you. As for support, do not beleive in all what people say, 90% of times they are either jealous or are our competitors only lol, because no company other than ours lists there phone numbers on all pages, or lists Yahoo, MSN, AOL, Skype ID which is online 90% of times than ours, so if someone says our support is sloppy he might not understand the meaning of support. Anyways, good luck with your site and future endevours.

    Hey funducoder,

I'm not sure what you're referring to when you speak of legal issues. How would it be "illegal" for PHPFox? I'm not following you there...

As for the PHPFox looking different - I could show atleast two, but they're a little too far out to link to on here and I'm not sure if they'd appreciate it or not.

I know PHPFox uses a templating system which is fairly easy for any designer to use... but, for some it may be hard - then again so is vBulletin, which is doing very well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing your company and putting PHPFox on a pedastal, NOT AT ALL. I'm actually looking at your script for another project... I guess I'm curious as to how easy it is to work with inside the code.

Also, is the code encrypted at all? does BuddyZone come with address zone? (would be a great selling point!).

    Thanks,

    Clenard
