    I've tried basically every single text editor for php in the last week, because there has been about 4 other threads with the same topic already and in my own opinions, they are all good however there are bad things:

    Ultra-Edit: WAY to complicated for any newbie to use
    PHPIde: THis is very easy to use and highly recommend it.
    Jext: SO SLOW and complicated user interface for beginners.
    TextPad: No comments...

    There is only one feature everyone is missing: Text Indenting AFTER it has all been written. Ie. I code in notepad and write:

    <?php
    if($action) {
    echo "This is the $action";
    }
    ?>

    Then I open it up with another program, I should be able to press a key or a tab and it automatically changes it to:

    <?php
    if($action) {
    echo "This is the $action";
    }
    ?>

    If anyone see a program like this tell me, Padders started making a script to do it, but I'm not sure if it's finished.

    Homesite, Homesite. This does all that. In fact you can tab multiple lines back and forth with the greatest of ease. Spend the cash and get a real editor.
    Please don't PM me with questions.
    Use the forums, that is what they are here for.

    1) It runs perfectly well on my computer

    2) You can turn off practically everything. All I have is the main menu bar. In fact mine just looks like a fancy notepad with a menu bar

    i haven't found any of the highlighting ones that work right yet. i have some lines of code like this:

    PHP Code:
    $txt preg_replace('/<a.+?>/'''$txt);
    and every one of them thinks there's a PHP ending tag. they use a primative parser compared to PHP itself and don't realize it's a function parameter.

    so i've just kept using Notepad or, when i want line numbering, NoteTab Light.

    well, after reading through many different threads about this, and trying out a few of the editors, i eventually chose EmEdit 3. Nobody ever mentioned it here. I found it by searching on download.com and tried it.

    it's pretty good. it does everything i needed it to do, except for debugging. its customizable, has plug-in support, has line-numbering, highlighting for tons of programming languages, find and replace, auto complete, auto indenting, and some other stuff

    oh, and Dr Larry, EmEdit highlighted that code just fine, i tested it.

    thanks everyone for your opinions
