    Is this correct: "sort by ascending" ?

    or should I say: "sort in ascending" ?

    I'm not sure what you mean, but I'll take a stab at
    Code:
    select column1, column2 from table order by column1 asc
    If you mean in English, you'd say that something is sorted ascending or sorted descending, but you need some kind of qualifer like "alphabetically" to be totally correct.

    If it is a grammatical question, "Sort ascending" or "Ascending sort" are both correct.
    Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

    SELECT prod_id, name FROM cartons
    INNER JOIN reinforced ON prod = prod_id
    ORDER BY (width*height*depth) DESC
