    How to determine advertising rates?

I am going to start selling banner ads on my site. I am unsure what rates to charge. Is there someway to get a ballpark estimate based on number of page views, number of visitors, adult/non-adult, ... ?

The site gets a few thousand visitors per day, and about a million accesses. Different areas of the site get different numbers of page views and visitors. I am planning to put a banner ad in an area that gets about 1-2 thousand visitors per day. The site has adult content, but I do not consider it to be pornographic..

Hi, you could go to your competitors sites that sell advertising directly and see what they offer - keeping in mind that practically nobody sells advertising for listed rates.

Also you could try to go to advertising directories that lists sites that are looking for advertisers and see if there are any similar to yours and what they are asking.

In general, if there is a demand by advertisers for your type of traffic, the rate you will be able to charge will vary on how responsive your visitors are to potential advertiser's offers/ads. So to get the optimal rate you will need to seek out and approach ideal advertisers since you know your visitors needs best.

    John,

I took your advice and checked out similar sites. I was pleasantly suprised to see that they were charging high rates. Rates for large banner ads varied between $50/month and $5000/month.

One of my concerns is that there is only one person who has expressed an interest in placing an ad that I want to sell to. I do not want to price them out, but I also do not want to undercharge. I am thinking about starting off with $150/month. Perhaps other people will contact me after they see the ad. I might increase rates at a later date.

NVB, It's hard for me to judge their prices without knowing their CPM (if I don't know how many impressions they serve).

When offering ad space, I would have thought you would usually calculate the estimate using a CPM.
