    Real Life Examples

    Hi Guys,

I was wondering, are there any web design books or web tutorials that take a high profile, real life website and go through the development from a developers/designers point of view.

Basically, I have learnt x amount of technology and can bring it all together well but would like to see how others do it. I just want to get a better idea of the thinking involved at that level.

It would be great if say someone broke down a medium (in terms of technology and features used) site and gave a full tutorial on how to build it. I am examining other sites and trying to learn more and more myself but I want to work on a self learning project with all of the resoucres in one place.

Hope I havent just rambled on for half a page and you know what I mean.

If you want to design and build good websites, the first thing you should do is learn about usability. An understanding of web usability is vital.

Webmonkey and Webmasterbase have a lot of info on this.

    Good luck.

There are quite a few books that take you through the process, there is an interesting one based around the Amazon Dot Com developmetn cycle but I cannot remember what it is called.

Not him again...pardon all the Jakob fans out there, but he is seriously over the top with his usability, and following his rules will allow you to create incredibiy ugly web sites.

I would hate to go on the web if all web sites look like www.useit.com .

When designing, I follow the W3C's XHTML standard, if a page validates XHTML, it'll pretty much work in 95% of all the computers.

You're not offending any Jakob fans (or lack of them) here on Sitepoint.

Well, SitePoint is looking at starting a member-driven website redesign service for charities where teams of members, mentors and advisors go through the complete redesign and redevelopment of a mid-level website.

This will include process documents, discovery, client feedback, etc.

This may be of some use to you, so keep your eye on this space

I would also recommend the book: Collaborative Web Development, as it outlines how to take a project from the "Hi, my name is [x]" stage all the way to completion. I've found it to be an invaluable resource

I was thinking about it but I have a limited budget for conferences/events etc and it is a little expensive for what you get. I can see it (apart from teh guest speaker) being more of an exhibition rather than a gathering of experts who will share late breaking research results.

I got this new book entitled. Eye Candy: Fresh Styles for Web Deisgners by Curt Cloninger also by New Riders.

It provides great examples and at the same time divides then into shall we say different genres.
