No, unfortunately SitePoint's aren't redeemable for the book. We've reduced the price of the book and shipping as much as we could to make it affordable for everyone. If we reduced it any further we wouldn't have enough left to pay Kevin to continue producing new content for you all...

"Build a Web-based file repository or photo gallery"

I'm going to create a wallpaper/background site. I wonder if this topic covered in your book is worth the US$34.95. I'm sure your book is great, but creating an advanced wallpaper site is all I need to do.

Your book looks fantastic, but I've already skim read your Online PHP/MySQL (to look at it in detail soon), I'm wondering is your book is worth it for the one task (since I'm not going to be using PHP/MySQL for anything else?

    Thanks alot!

Im going to get my copy tomorrow.

About 3 months ago I got a book called "Sams teach yourself PHP4 in 24 hours", I don't understand anything past section 12 -- but with Kevin's php/mysql article on sitepoint I was able to (within a couple of hours) put together a simple database where I could enter information and links results to make a simple output page. Quite easy when it's explained the right way! And do you know the best thing about Kevin's articles? I REALLY understand them.

Thanks Kevin, looking forward to the book.

    The TOC page

I'd like to point out that the table of contents page has a few errors:

The page numbers for chapter 6 and 7 appears to be switched and the description for chapter 8 and 9 are the same.

    Thanks !

    Kevin,

I just wanted to say "Thank You" for all the great work you have been doing with PHP.

    To everyone else,

I started learning PHP over a year ago by following Kevin's famous "Build Your Own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL" series.

Kevin's work is helpful, down to earth and insightful.
Whenever someone tells me they want to learn PHP, I point them to Kevin's work and articles. I highly recommend his book.

P.S. If your wondering what I learned and developed so far, just have a look at 01MOTORS.com and http://01wholesale.com

    I will defenitely buy it!

Kev, I've little doubt that your book beats the h-ll out of 95% of if not all php/mySQL books available in bookstores right now, but yours is a bit more expensive

I wish there were more authors like you, who made this stuff easy and fun to understand (the only other book I know of that made it super clear and fun was Dick Oliver's HTML 3.2 in 24 hours).

I really hope you try to get this book published so that it would be a little less expensive, and you'd be financed and able to write more on other subjects (and hopefully the publishers wouldn't totally rip you off and you'd end up with more money than just selling it off sitepoint)!

Couldn't you also sell the book off amazon.com even if its not published?

However, I'm temporarily overloaded with other crap, but defenitely, I read your php/mySQL article and have been looking to buy a book since, and in a week or two, I'll no doubt purchase this gem - and reccommend it to others!

Good luck, and I hope to see many more books from you

I'll give you the tip about traditional publishers. When you write a book for a publisher very rarely do they pay you royalties in advance unless you're Steven King. So you could end up puting months of work into writing it with no guarantees. They generally sell their technical books like this one at a higher price, and the author receives a very small commission, only a few dollars from every sale at best... Oh and did I mention a 9-12 month delay while they publish the book?

I think that self publishing and in particular print-on-demand is the way of the future for budding authors and Kevin is doing just that. There's enough people who use SitePoint regularly to warrent further books providing we get decent support for this publication.

Now go buy it so Kevin can start on the next one

    Thats good!

Just out of curiousity, what about selling it on amazon.com, I imagine that would dramatically increase sales, no?

Selling on Amazon might be a possibility in the future. However they also want their share of the pie which ranges from 50 to 75 percent of the sale price.

Ouchie - sounds like the way your selling the book is the best idea, I just hope you get enough people to buy it, but as Matt said there are enough

Perhaps if all else fails, you could try the stephen king method Make it into a .pdf and charge like 5 -10 bucks to download it! Heh, now I'm just being stupid...

At this time we are only accepting Visa and MasterCard.

Other cards such as Solo and American Express are not supported at this time through our credit card processor (WorldPay).

Self publishing and direct distribution is the best way to keep the price of a book down, though it is more work and risk as you have to pay the printers in advance, warehouse the books, process payments and ship the books etc.

Even if you used a wholesale distributer to get your book into the bookshops they would expect at least a 70% discount as they then give the bookshops between 40-50% discount and it is usually sold on a sale or return basis which means you need to increase the price in order to maintain a good margin.

Once you have exhausted sales to SitePoint members perhaps you can thet set up a affiliate program so members can sell it from their web sites.

Good luck with the book, I will be buying my copy real soon!
