    Alternative Navigation ...

    Hey guys,

this is the first site i've come across that uses a 3D naviagation system.

You can find it here (Click on the high speed flash link)

What do you think in terms of usability and interactivity?

I find it refreshing but quite hard to use - although you can zoom in on each topic I find it hard to make out the section headings.

All in all I quite like like it as its unusual but is it functional?

I don't have Flash, so all I get is a big, pale green box. The accessibility is about zero, and therefore I'd say usability is about zero as well.

Flash is fine, but you need an accessible alternative built with standard technologies (like ... HTML).

If that's the simplified version, I'd hate to see the complicated one!

Innovating and kinda fun, but only for a minute. Then the whole thing just becomes annoying. And usability wise, it's worthless. I can imagine it better suited for a game menu or something like that, but it definitely doesn't belong on the web.

Yeah I agree that its innovating and kinda fun but on a more serious note is this going to increase the use of flash for navigation? I know already that flash for navigation is a complete nuisance and has SEO issues but it is "Innovating and kinda fun" - should google start indexing such content?

just to clarify: it's not flash, it's a quicktime VR (which is what the site specialises on, so it's kind of in keeping with their content).

google does index flash, but only if it's built in a reasonable way (with real text contained in the swf file, rather than having everything as an image, for instance).

Also it is a little hard to use.

I don't know, maybe I'm just getting grumpier in my old age - but surely the most basic function of a website is to allow you to find the information on it easily (as mentioned elsewhere on this forum - within two clicks).

While it might work well as part of the "experience" of a game, on a website I think it's a mistake to make the basic navigation of the site in any way complex or confusing.

I wouldn't call that grumpyness! It's the fundamentals of usability and a key to "successe" with your website .
