    getting listed ... now what

bit of a waffly question here, on all my sites I use meta tags, titles etc and also use addweb and manually send the url to search engines and I don't get great rankings and want to improve, so what can a girl do?

Also am I right in saying that meta tags are going out the window and isn't there a new way of doing it - with a front page or something?

If anyone knows anything to help that woudl be great - I oudl like to set something up as I currently have 7 sites which need some attention (but also don't want to pay for a service)

    Thanking you

    Sarah

    Sarah,

Search engines rely a lot on link popularity these days, so you need to exchange links with other sites. Go over to About.com and see if any of the pages there cover your topics. If so, e-mail the page guide and submit your URL. They are quite nice about including your site in their pages.

Do online searches in Google and Alltheweb.com to see who else is covering your topic and ask if they would include your link? There is a DigitalWomen.com site that has a newsletter and website that has links. In fact, there are a lot of women in business websites that would love to get your links on their site. It becomes a win-win situation.

I also suggest getting the book, "101 Ways to Promote Your Website" by Susan Sweeney. It is an excellent resource on ways to increase your traffic.

Well Meta Tags are still used by a lot of search engines. They can be helpful in some cases so keep using them.

get in directories like Yahoo and DMOZ

Also go to google, search for your desired keyword, click on the first listing that shows up, and then use the Google Toolbar (get it if you don't have it) to see what the backward links are, get those people to link to you.
