    some advice please

Hi, i'm running a forum on the paranormal, and up until now things have been going fine, a little slow at times, but for the most OK.

until earlier this week when two of my members started to argue, here is the link:

I've closed the thread, but can anyone give me any advice should this happen again?

    Thank you

It seems to me that the argument has been conducted in a respectful manner.

Here at sitepoint we (sometimes) have to deal with much more hostile arguments than this one, and we usually try to let the arguments run their course, up until the point where person insults are used (or unpleasant language, hate, racial, etc).

When you think about it (and I certainly did), a heated argument, as long as it doesn't get out of hand, is very good for your forum. It attracts people (visitors) to take part in the discussion.

SitePoint does not need to have a 'General Chat' area. SitePoint forum is geared towards webmaster-related issues. However, it is well known that if there is a space where members can post their mind, get into silly discussions, or have heated arguments, it increases the feeling of community and helps to convert visitors into members.

That is why you'll find that most forums have such 'general chat' areas.

In summary, I think that if the argument in your forum continued in this manner, there would be no need to close it. Heated discussion is exciting, while personal insults or unpleasant language are not.

I guess what you are saying is true, and compaied to most arguments on forums it is quite mild.

my problem is that I know most of my users would run rather than read that type of message, they go their looking for help to problems, and most are normally stressed out enough without problems like this

    Thank you for your advice.
