    Problems with cache

    Hi

    I have written a site which uses frames. Sadly though I have just uploaded a newer version of it, but when I load it in either IE5 or NS6 they both only retrieve an old version.

    I have adjusted internet settings and deleted offline content etc, but they still only drag the old version. I even deleted everything off the server and uploaded the whole lot again, which made no difference.

    Does anyone know how I can force the browser to get the most up to date version?

    Thanks a lot

    Refreshing it using CTRL + F5 may help. You also may want to stop the pages from being cached, so the user only sees the most up-to-date version.

    This tag therefore needs to be placed in the [head]

    Code:
    <meta http-equiv="Pragma" content="no-cache">

    try these and see if they help:

    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Cache-Control" CONTENT="no-cache">
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache">
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="Expires" CONTENT="0">

    Thanks to both you guys for those suggestions -- one question, seeing as how it is using frames, shall I put those tags in EVERY page?

    If i understand your situation correctly, then my guess would be that you only need to put these in your frameset.

    By the way, did they make any difference?

    I use FrontPage 2002 and sometimes I encouter the same problem especially when I publish update pages.

    Even after I log on using FTP to verify if the new pages did publish, they still don't appear.

    I don;t know if it could be a server problem. Takes a few hours before the new pages appear properly. Evetually they do. Can't really understand why either.

    I'm pretty sure that is the main problem. I was doing it on a test server which happened to be a free host, and it wouldn't update, until a few hours later. Then I put it on my proper host, and it worked fine, immediately.

    I guess so too. I mean, I cleared my cache and the history, and refreshed the page a thousand times. The first time it happened I dreamnt about it all night!

    I was just a bit pi... um, frustrated that I had cleared my PC's cache and then wiped the server and uploaded again, for no reason!

    Well I suppose I have learnt one thing -- don't use free hosts, even for test purposes!
