I need a huge favour! please guys

Ive got a client who currently has a db online which uses ASP to search it, all written by me. Currently, the db has 300,000 records, and the ASP is running fine.

Now, i jus finished have an arguement with M$ tech support that access only supports 60,000 records, and anything more would cos a HUGE slw down, which, for me, it didnt

You see, the problem is that the client wants to expand to 1.8 million records (wahyhay, blah blah) so what did M$ suggest.

    I gotta get MS SQL

now, my work cant afford that for 1 client, the favour is this:

If i give all the specs for a databse, could someone please make it. it only has 4 tables, and you couldnt have to put any information in it, jus create the db.

    please please please please please

    thanks

    d

Do you mean you only need the tables and the fields, right ?

Post the table names and fields here and I would do it for you..

D, you do realize that MS SQL is not independent like Access, right? You can't create a standalone SQL Server database like you can in access.

If you need a cheap host with MS SQL, try www.korksoft.com. for $100(US) a year, you get 150mb diskspace and 150mb of SQL Server. There are higher packages if you need it.

Many hosts have a control panel set up which enables you to do it. You can also youse Enterprise Manager (I think that's the right one...?) to do it from your client PC.

Dave, thanks for the link. I'm definitely going to check that out as I need a SQL Host soon. So much easier.

    dhtmlgod, mate...

Have you considered using MySQL? It's a great 1/2 step between Access and SQL server and best of all, it's free!

I use it all the time with ASP and have no problems at all. If you are going to grow to 1.8 million records, then Access was never meant to do that. It's really not even meant to be multi user as in accessible by a web server but because of ADO, OLEDB and ODBC it just worked out that way accidentally.

It is easy to install and there's a great GUI front end for it out there. Did I mention that it was free?

If you do intend to go down the SQL Server road, that's cool too. You'll find that whatever way you go, you'll need to change your SQL statements for things like date formats etc. Check out http://www.aspfaqs.com for more details.

Good luck and I hope you find a host that'll meet your needs!

i understand about access, and using mySQL has crossed my mind, but its up to the server, yeah?

and the concurrent users isnt a problem. only one section is using the db, and thats only to search and retrieve the results.

    D,

If you want to create the database you can get a 120 day trial version of SQL 2000 for free.

If you want though i can create the database for you in SQL2000 or 7.

But it's not going to do you much good without a SQL Server on your server.

I can also suggest some hosts if you need one.

If your host has SQL Server, they will need to create a database on the server for you. Like I said, it's not a standalone file like an access database. Once the database is defined, you can either create the table through enterprise manager, or you can just create an ASP page containing all the SQL Create table statements.

D, I tried to email you but got it back?

    Whats your email?

Dave, You can also attach any database to a SQL server, so they do not need to create the entire database for you, just attach one you give them

I know this is kind of off-topic, but for your video / music remix, download SonicFoundry's Acid 3.0. Can be found at http://www.SonicFoundry.com or http://www.AcidPlanet.com . I use it all the time, it's crazy. If you want some loop sounds, I can send them to you. Just check it out and read a little about it. It's awesome.

Excellent. It's a cool thing to be into, a good release for anyone (even if you're not quite the best at it). I've made a few mixes and such, but have yet to finish / upload them.

I think that's what I'll do for today.
