yeah I saw that in the new design ALA is using verdana, but in their previous design (with art headers) it was Trebuchet ! designbyfire.com mentioned that

Why not let the user decide? I am really annoyed by websites that use smaller fonts than are default selected in the browser. Take something like this local bank. The font looks like fly turds...
Slashdot.org does the right thing, it leaves the main text on browser-defined font and size.

    huh?

We're discussing the font for body text, not text size....

    Welcome to Sitepoint... I guess...

Because the default size on most visual browsers is 16px, which is a little large for general copy. And I don't need to point out how difficult Times New Roman is to read on screen. Why don't we just serve unstyled mark-up and let the user create a layout to their liking? Why don't we make web-pages in plain text and let the user mark them up?

Dunno about you, but I'm certainly not going to cater for the 0.1% of visitors who know how to change browser-defaults, and leave the 99% with huge ugly text.

Why don't you hook up a user-defined stylesheet?

may i respectfully suggest that you go back and read post #1 if you have any doubt

i agree -- the best strategy is not to set the font size at all

egor, 16px is "a little large" for you

that's the part that most d3zign3rs seem to forget

the web is not about you, it's about your site visitors

What most pr0gram3rrz seem to forget is that competent designers do the necessary research and base decisions on best practices. Allowing user options such as an increase or decrease in font size is fine, but not setting any style in the first place is just plain stupid.

    Designers know best.

    "just plain stupid"

    that's respectful

i trust you don't treat your clients that way

oh, and best practice says that offering "change font size" buttons is a flawed strategy and a colossal waste of time

Rudy, I don't think that Toastie meant you with the word ignorant ! he was just joking !! an advisor rank in SP can't be given to an ignorant ! right Toastie?

Anyway I don't agree on letting the user choose the font family may be the size but not the font face !! moreover few people (something like 1%) can tweak these things

the challenge stands -- toastie impugned my cred, and i demand satisfaction

programmer, indeed! the lowest of the low!

i am an information architect, man -- there is nothing higher!!

we fart in the general direction of programmers!!

IA encompasses interface design, functional layout, usability, scripting, database design, and tact (of which toastie seems to be in short supply)

    um, ya

    Hi all

    First time posting here..

I was looking at this just a few days ago and found a lot of references which cited the first link below. The second link seems to sum what a few people are saying, that verdana is more legible at smaller font sizes.

    http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/u...52/UK_font.htm

    http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt6/html-email-fonts.htm

I work at a UK university where we tend to use arial for body text, scaleable in ems but equivalent to 12 pt/12px. A few of the academics have been puching for verdana as a more readable font for screen, but for our redesign we're thinking of keeping arial body text but use verdana when we need it to be smaller.

btw having had it drawn to my attention, I'm starting to notice this combination across more and more sites

There's s'posed to be six new typefaces specifically designed for the screen to be coming from MS in 2006: http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=47&aid=78683
