    Manual Rails installation

From some reason "gem install rails" does not work for me. I don't know why but it simply does not work (not just for rails but for any gem, it try to get gemlist from http://gems.rubyforge.org/ and dies). I'm not behind any proxy, don't use firewall...

I gave up on this one months ago, downloaded and installed gems from my local disk. Now I want to update my rails installation but can't find active_record, action_pack, action_mailer ... gems anywhere for download. There is rails gem and nothing more. Where can I find those gems?

Or how to make packed rails to work. I downloaded the .tgz, unpacked it, set my virual host, got congrats message, but when I created some controllers and methods I got "failed to init rails application" error.
