Yeah, this is a must. Not having to feel like a newbie when joining a forum will keep me around a lot longer. That's why I'm not a fan of rating/reputation systems that various forums use. After being here for so long, I find it hard to go to other forums that have little to no traffic. There is always something going on here and always someone interesting with something to say.
Everybody has their own personal preferences, but you would be surprised at how many prefer smaller forums over larger forums...it's the whole community feel that draws them in
