    user authentication suggestions please

I have a database of staff members on our intranet, what i want to do is to enable staff members to edit their own records, but nobody else's. Now i had come up with the idea of taking the NT username that they are logged in their PC with and comparing it with the username stored on their record. However, i got nowhere when trying to find how to obtain the NT username (i'm running a linux server so can't set use NT logins from IIS).
So what i am asking is for suggestions on how else to do it.
Its not high security so it doesn't have to be air tight, the basic requirement is that it can't be IP based (users use different machines) and ideally they don't have to log in all the time (the plebs are useless at remembering passwords)

I don't think it would be possible without having them login with a password

you could however have then signup using their nt username/pw so they wouldn't need another pair, but you can't just pull the passwords that they already use.
