DISCOVERED: A simple way to beat scumware!

Ok, I've come up with a simple way to beat some scumware, at least TopText, without using Javascript or pop ups or redirects or some other fancy or possibly unsupported method. I can't say if this works with SurfPlus, because their installation fails on my machine.

Ha! What's worse than scumware? Faulty scumware!

Anyone with SurfPlus installed please check these pages and see if it works and let me know.

The method is quite simple: scumware is dumb (dumbware?) and doesn't do a particularly good job of digging out all the possible keywords it can scam off your HTML pages. In fact, any simple and well-placed HTML tag, even one that doesn't affect the display of the page, will interrupt its capability to find a phrase to exploit.

To illustrate, I've created two Web pages. The first is wide open to scumware, the second is virtually identical but is "descummed". If you have scumware enabled on your PC, try them both and note the difference. Also, view the code to see how I accomplished it.

    SCUMABLE: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr.html
    DESCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scum...descummed.html

If you don't have scumware on your PC, here are two .gif files that illustrate the difference:

    SCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scumware/cr.gif
    DESCUMMED: http://www.positionguardian.com/scum..._descummed.gif

So, with minor code changes, you can protect your pages. Let me know what you think. If this proves to be a good way to overcome the scum, I'll consider writing a free online utility to "descum" your pages for you automatically.

If you write the utility and make it available for free, I'll run an item about it on the house in the Newstips Bulletin (reaches thousands of journalists who cover computer stuff).

Ok, I'll work on it over the weekend. I want to make it sophisticated, yet easy to use.

I saw what you did; however, it seems like it can easily be beaten by TopText, it will increase your page size quite a bit (by at least 25-50%, I bet) and it could hinder your site being indexed by search engines.

Basically, the page was marked up so that the words were interrupted by HTML comments. Therefore there were no words that TopText could use.
