PayPal API - How much SOAP do you need?

OK...we've decided to go with PayPal Pro for now.

I have never implemented this before...how much SOAP ability to you need for a basic setup? This is simple shopping...just a donation, not a ton of products and options, though I would like to do some server-side data validation before submitting payment information.

When it says SOAP is "required," do they mean you have to be really good with it, or capable of following some directions while referencing an O'Reilly?

PS - I know plain old PayPal would do the trick. Except that they want to grab the donor contact info for thank you letters, organization news updates, etc.
