How does a site like this make money?

And how much does it make?

I'm thinking of doing a site like this, forums, articles etc. for over 40's looking for work, ideally with global content.

I have the contacts, and the ability to create content and get content provided, but its apparent from sites as successful as this one, that a huge amount of work goes on. The people here aren't therefore doing it for fun, so if I'm to spend all my hours getting a site up and running with this kind of appeal, I wonder do I approach it as a dotcom looking for finance, or can it be started small, and if so, what kind of volume of hits are needed for advertisers to pay the kind of money that pays a mortgage.

I'm just intrigued by the profitability of sites like this, and I confess to knowing almost nothing about gearing a site up, and promoting it despite my ability to get such a site's content in order.

I'd appreciate a sitepoint response to this site, but also some URL's that can bring me up to speed beyond the subject matter of these threads.

    Many thanks,

My guess is Sitepoint gets most of its funding from sponsorships..and next would be ad sales. As far as how much..I'd be hard pressed to think that they would divulge that info.

your best bet would be to include job listings and then charge companies to post a job.

you're right of course, my initial vision though was one of providing advice and resources and links, rather than out and out job listings, after all, for it to retain a global feel, that would involve too much work for little old me, but a site that offers support and advice would be good, like this one.

I wasn't after figures of course regarding sitepoint, only the methods they use, whether its clickthroughs, whether sponsors fund them straight out rather than by how successful banners are etc.

I know that the first 6 months of work will not make any money, and I'm not out to get rich, just for it to pay back for some of the effort involved. I don't have a big mortgage after all

if you dont want to offer listings you should partner with a site that does... get some commissions that way.

oooh, is that what the sitepoint advisor system is all about. Very, very smart!

I will feel less guilty about asking questions now.
